The Coupe de la Ligue

The Coupe de la Ligue, otherwise called the French League Cup is an annual national tournament for french football clubs, being held under the authority of the Ligue de Football Professionnel (Professional Football League of France). The Coupe de la Ligue history is not so rich, as far as the first tournament was organized in 1994. As contrasted with the Coupe de France, allowing amateur teams to participate, only professional clubs may take part in this competition. The winner is secured a berth at the Europa League.

Before 1994 the Coupe de la Ligue was an optional tournament for the Professional Football League clubs being conducted in the summer off-season. It was a good opportunity for teams to work on the squad and try new schemes out. The tournament’s prime objective was to eliminate rust during off-season. Just in 1994 all Ligue 1, Ligue 2 and several Ligue 3 professional clubs went in the Coupe de la Ligue.

The most award-winning Coupe de la Ligue club is PSG, having taken the trophy 4 times, the last one in 2014.
