The Coupe de France, also called the Coupe Charles Simon is an annual national competition, organized under the authority of the French Football Federation. The first tournament was held in 1918. Once, in 1992, the Coupe de France was not played to the end. Then one of the Stade Armand-Cesari terraces failed to resist pressure during the semifinal Bastia – Marseille match. 15 people died, more than 1500 were injured. The decision was made to stop the Coupe de France contest.
The Coupe de France was established after the First World War and was named after Charles Simon, who was a famous player and one of the French Football Federation founders. The football player deceased during the war. Since 1927 president of the country has been attending the Coupe de France final and personally hands a trophy over to the captain of the winning team.
Professional as well as amateur teams participate in the Coupe de France. Before the next season start the trophy holder competes against the championship winner for the Trophée des Champions. They also receive golden ticket into the Europa League. The prize itself is a perpetual trophy, and the winner gets its copy for eternal storage.
The most award-winning Coupe de France club is Marseille, having won the tournament 10 times. PSG takes the second position possessing 8 trophies.
